How to install an APK file safely

Sometimes an app isn't on the Play Store in your region, or you need an older version. If you ever sideload an APK, do it carefully:

  1. Download only from a trusted sourceUse the developer's own website or a well-known mirror. Avoid random “free premium APK” sites — they are the most common source of malware.
  2. Check the file before installingScan the APK with the antivirus on your phone, and compare the file size and version with the official listing.
  3. Allow installs for that one app onlyOn Android 8 and later, grant “Install unknown apps” permission to just your browser or file manager — never leave it on for everything.
  4. Install, then turn the permission back offOnce the app is installed, revoke the permission. Check the app's requested permissions; a flashlight app should not need your contacts.
Safety rule: if a site offers a paid app or a “MOD” version for free, it's pirated and often tampered with. Every app on this page links to its official Google Play listing instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is an APK file?

APK (Android Package Kit) is the file format Android uses to install apps — the equivalent of an .exe installer on Windows. When you install from Google Play, the store downloads and installs the APK for you behind the scenes.

Is it safe to install APK files from the internet?

It can be, if the file comes from the developer's official website or a reputable source and hasn't been modified. APKs from unknown sites are a leading way malware spreads on Android. When in doubt, install from Google Play — that's why every download button on APKDen opens the official Play Store page.

Why don't you host the APK files directly?

App developers own their software. Linking to the official Google Play listing means you always get the genuine, latest and safest version, and the developer gets the download credit. It also guarantees the file you install is exactly the one the developer published.

What does “MOD APK” mean, and should I use one?

A MOD APK is an app that someone has altered — usually to unlock paid features for free. They are pirated, frequently contain ads or malware injected by the modifier, and can get your accounts banned. We don't list them and recommend avoiding them.

An app says “not available in your country”. What can I do?

Availability is set by the developer and by local law, so the safest options are to wait for an official release, contact the developer, or pick a similar app that is officially available in your region. The guides on our blog suggest alternatives for the most common cases.
